The Oracle database administrator (DBA) serves as technical authority for database design, administration, development, and implementation. The DBA understands the inner workings of the specialized Oracle software used to manage each database data store. The Oracle DBA supports: installations, upgrades, patch installation, performance monitoring, system configurations, and capacity planning.

Responsibilities: The Oracle DBA position will include but is not limited to the following tasks.

  • Install, upgrade, and patch Oracle Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS)
  • Monitor and apply database security and patching as identified by CIS or Oracle Critical Patch updates
  • Perform/define the data/database backup and recovery process for recoverability and availability
  • Ensure archive logging is used on all production environments
  • Follow the SCM model: install required patches or upgrades to development environments for testing by developers prior to applying in test environments
  • Apply patches or upgrades to test environments for testing by functional users prior to applying in production environments
  • Ensure that copies of production databases are in place to serve as a development and test environments where appropriate and refreshed as needed
  • Set up scripts to start, stop and cleanup each Oracle database and the associated application
  • Create scripts to help automate many of the database administration processes
  • Control user access to the database resources and information
  • Assist developers, analysts, and functional users with database related questions
  • Assist in the development of sound database queries and reports
  • Keep current with Oracle database versions, operating systems, and application technologies
  • Audit database and system usage and performance and tune database environments
  • Monitors and allocates storage space for data growth
  • Maintain database process documents
  • Work with management in response to audit questions and findings
  • Be the focal point when problems arise with the database, applications, disk usage, restricted user access, and access to the database
  • Work in a team environment with both local and remote database administrators responsible for multiple environments
  • Be a member of the On Call support rotation
  • Work as a member of the Cloud Strategy Team (approximately 25% of time)
    • Experience with a variety of cloud-based database types, data migration from on-premises to cloud and the use of cloud tools, cloud database setup and administration
    • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code including CloudFormation, Azure Resource Manager Templates, archiving, SQL Development, and performance tuning
    • Knowledge of network protocols like TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, SMTP, FTP, TELNET, HTTP, Oracle, MySQL and MS-SQL Tasks
    • Duties will also include assisting in monitoring capacity and performance for test and production databases to ensure they are reliable, efficient, cost effective, and provide the required functionality, use of public cloud (AWS/Azure) RDBMS design and engineering
    • Automation mindset and hands on experience in implementing automation using DevOps tools and scripting languages such as shell script, python, PowerShell, Database Administration of Microsoft SQL servers within co-lo, IaaS and PaaS Microsoft Azure and AWS

  • A BS or BA degree is required in an appropriate field (e.g., computer science, information systems, systems engineering, or business administration) or eight years of related experience in Oracle DBA position required 
  • A minimum of five years of DBA experience is required
  • Strong soft skills and organizational skills a must
  • Organization security clearance required
  • Pursuant to a government contract, this specific position requires U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be willing and able to complete a DoE low risk background investigation for the position

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • Exadata or Exalogic experience
